Genuine Tips For Newbies

2008 August 3

Recently there was a hot discussion going on in wahm. One person asked me to give him/her some tips on successful freelancing for newbies. So here are they,

  • Patience – In every freelancer site, it is bit difficult to get a job. So be patient.
  • Marketing – How can you showcase your skills WITHOUT a good marketing campaign? It’s NOT about seeing/applying/attending interview/getting the job in the cyber world. So market your skills using blogs, websites etc.
  • Keep Learning – If you don’t, the next guy would overcome you sooner than you expect.
  • NEVER think about data entry jobs – You won’t save a penny. There are plenty of work out there to pay you more.
  • Work Hard – It’s easy to think “I can sit at home and earn handsomely”. The fact is, “it’s very difficult to get a regular online assignment than an offline job/business”. However, once you started earning through an online assignment/job, the money that you could earn is limited only by your hard work.

Wish You All The Best…

Have A Fabulous Time.

Online Sales Assistant

2008 July 27
by Pothi

Hi,

Today I saw two job openings (that were posted at-least two weeks back) in oDesk. Both openings were in different category with different names. But the work that has to be done is the same. It’s about Online Sales.

The work of an OSA (Online Sales Assistant) is quite simple. He/she would send some pre-written emails to hundreds of people every week. If anyone responds, then the second email would be sent but with little more personalization. If the client still comes forward for more information, either close the deal on your own or leave it to your supervisor who could handle it very well than you.

The requirements:

  • Patience (out of 100 mails sent, only one might respond).
  • Creativity/Common Sense (we need to know each client’s requirement and write a customized follow up letter).
  • Good Written English Skill (Not unnecessarily to be excellent, a skill to write without typo and grammatical mistakes would do).

I’ve applied to both. But the chances of getting hired is very less. Because at-least one person has already been hired a long way back, doing an excellent job and of course earning handsomely. :)

Which Is The Best Freelancer Website?

Howdy there,

I’ve been working in oDesk since the start of this year. There are so many features that attract serious employers(buyers) and qualified freelancers(providers). However, I do not agree that it’s a complete website. It has got few dangerous pitfalls. For example, still there is no regulation to stop spams completely. Sites like Elance stops few of the spams by charging hefty fees.

I still believe oDesk is the best market place where you could find plenty of genuine job openings that are hourly based.

What do you feel about oDesk?

In your point of view, which is the best freelancing website?

Which is the best freelancing website where one could find genuine fixed price projects?

Did You Like “Windows XP SP3″?

2008 July 19
by Pothi

I’ve been using Windows XP for ‘Office‘.

Today I had some time to ‘tune’ my laptop. I saw few reviews about Windows XP SP3, its advantages and disadvantages. I downloaded an ISO image from MS download center, burned it in a CD and was about to install it….

Suddenly I got a work that took about 5 hours of my time. So I’ve decided to install it some other day.

BTW, what’s your experience in installing Windows XP SP3?

An update: I’ve installed Windows XP SP3 lately and it’s doing well so far.

Luckweaver.com Will Be Back Soon…

Luckweaver.com will be back soon. I got this information from a friend of mine who was an admin in that forum. It will be merged with seekluck.com soon. I’ll post an update on this here. However it will be a part of seekluck.com rather than a standalone domain.

Google Gears

Google Gears Logo

It is simply amazing to use GoogleGears with WordPress. My speed while working with wordpress has increased tremendously since I installed it in my laptop.

If you don’t know what is it and how to use it with your wordpress blog, check it out here.

The other application (that I use) that takes advantage of Google Gears is “RTM” (Remember The Milk).

Luckweaver.net was born

Today just few minutes back, Luckweaver.net was born. I chose this domain name because of my love with luckweaver.com and it’s forum which is going to be merged with seekluck.com soon.

Update on 16, September, 2008: I’ve updated luckweaver.net. I’m making this blog entry as a sticky post too. :)

I’m going to use this mainly to showcase my team’s skillset, portfolio projects and the testimonials. There are other things, I’d like to add up there, but for a start, I think, it’s enough.

I’ve created that website using the free template found on the net. I’ve changed a lot of things from that template like colors to suit my taste. :)

In the future, it might be Joomla or Drupal or WordPress. I mean I’m again going to change the entire website using one of these. I feel WordPress is easy to install and customize. The only issue with WordPress is the “pages” section. I couldn’t find a way to set it properly. I may need to know bit more about how to customize it to suit the current layout. Until then, I’d like to stick with the present layout.

Do visit luckweaver.net in the future to see the changes to give your valuable comments.

Looking forward to your valuable comments for my new-born website.

oDesk – Provider Company

2008 July 8
by Pothi

There are many freelancer websites where one has to pay a heavy fee to register a company.  In oDesk, it’s not only free to create/register a company (in oDesk, it’s called ‘Provider Company’), it’s free to apply to job openings in all the categories. In certain websites, one has to pay again to apply to job openings of different categories.

Here is the link to my provider company….

BTW, I’m looking for someone who could design a logo for my provider company. Is anyone interested?

Whatever happened to Luckweaver.com?

by Pothi

I was an active member in luckweaver.com.

Unfortunately, I think, the people behind luckweaver.com closed the site for undisclosed reasons.

I really miss it.

Had a nice platform to share my views.

Let’s see if they can bring it back…

HTML Editor

Now a days, it’s very difficult to live in this Web 2.0 era without the knowledge of HTML and a WYSIWYG editor. My favourite editor is pagebreeze.  It has plenty of features and yet simple to use. Check it out. You would like that too. It was of great help for me while doing a project in oDesk. In fact, it was recommended by a oDesk buyer(James Pumfrey). Unfortunately it isn’t available for linux. I’m looking for a good WYSIWYG editor in linux. Any recommendations?

By the way, what do you use to do simple coding in HTML?
