New Content – New Website

2009 February 24
by Pothi

LuckWeaver.com is a famous name among people who were searching for online opportunities and unemployed youth in India in 2007. It grew by leaps and bounds thanks to SeekLuck.com. I personally learned a lot from it. I have got a couple of friends there too.

When I involved into freelancing and when I started my own provider company, the very first name that struck me was LuckWeaver.Net. In a couple of months, I decided to have my own domain too to test my skills in web designing and in related areas. Until yesterday, I was using LuckWeaver.Net to showcase the portfolio of my team.

Now, I have decided that it’s time for me to give back something to the community. So I have redesigned LuckWeaver.Net to post my thoughts mainly on English, Online Money Making and other general topics.

So I may not continue to write on this blog anymore. :(

Please visit LuckWeaver.Net for updates.

Thanks! Have a fantastic time!

Internet Security

Internet is becoming so vulnerable every day (ok, at least every year). It’s very difficult to save important information online. A couple of weeks back, experts found a vulnerability in Internet Explorer. It was the talk of the town (or talk of the digg, etc) then.  It was immediately followed by a vulnerability in Firefox inwhich many people have a lot of trust.

I was a regular user of Firefox. I immediately switched onto Opera since then. I still use Firefox occasionally though. I also use Chrome and Safari in Windows. However the recent vulnerability in Safari made me think, if there is any security at all in the internet world where I spend almost 12 to 20 hours a day. It has also become very important to keep up to date with the lastest browser news.

Anyway, I’m still stick with Opera that is considered more secure than any other browser in the industry. Do share your views on this topic. Thanks.

Time To Switch Over To Skype?

2008 October 15
by Pothi

Recently I was in a situation where I had to TALK to one of my clients using Yahoo Messenger. The situation may be an ideal situation for others. Certainly not for me!

I’m using Linux (Ubuntu 8.04) with Pidgin installed in it to use Yahoo Messenger’s services. I was really bit embarassed when I was forced to TALK on a fine day. Then I explained the situation to my client and requested him to TALK via skype.

For those who don’t know much about the difference between skype and yahoo, here are some…

  1. Skype is available in almost all the platforms viz, windows, linux and mac. In case of Yahoo, it’s available only for windows and mac.
  2. Skype can also be used as an Instant Messenger.
  3. Skype offers better quality VOIP services.

Love to hear, if anyone of you switched to Skype from Yahoo.

Another Turn In My Life

Howdy there?

Today I had a chat with Tony, my colleague in ILM. It was a lovely conversation after a long time (almost after 6 months). We both exchanged many things that have changed in both of us. The conversation did touch our days as colleagues in our previous company.

Only that time, I remembered that I was a successful spoken English tutor in my previous career with ILM and its respective schools. I also recollected my days when I started blogging. I still remember now, my first blog was about spoken English created in blogger. I wrote nearly 10 posts before exporting that blog into wordpress. I moved to WP mainly for its simple yet attractive UI.

Now it’s time to digg that old life style again. I’m going to continue blogging in blogger with the same niche. Yes, it’s about genuine tips on improving spoken English. I’m not going to touch written English part. For one reason, I never touched that part during my entire career with ILM.

So, let’s move to that blog created in blogger. Here is the link…

Do visit this blogspot blog when you have time and enjoy reading my genuine tips on improving spoken English.

Hope I could meet you there. BFN.

BTW, my heartly thanks to Tony.

Opportunities Everywhere

When we ask someone,

Do You Want To Earn More?

out of 100 people, 99 would definitely give a confirmative answer…

However, if we ask the following question to the people who earn money through online,

“Can You Please Share Your Secrets Of Earning Money Through Internet?”

out of 100 people, how many would talk to you as before? :)

Only a few people might want to give you some genuine tips about how to make money through online? I joined in a forum that is based on broadband issues in India. Later this month, I got an email from the Admin of the forum announcing the introduction of the new section in it regarding online jobs. I was curious about it. Until the writing of this post, there have been two ideas brought out in public by the Admin of the forum. It’s a very active forum and I’m happy to see the Admin’s noble gesture to help millions of employed Indians to become entrepreneurs. If you’d like to know more about the ideas brought out by the forum’s Admin, click here.

Couple of weeks back, I wrote about wahm.in/forum that is doing a similar noble job by providing direct jobs to many people in India. Those who’ve missed it, click here.

Free Web Hosting – A Joke?

2008 September 4
by Pothi
I’ve been searching to find a free/cheap web hosting for nearly a month. I came across many reviews and many promises. When one can’t a *perfect* hosting even from a paid hosting package, it is silly to _expect_ perfection among the free/cheap web hosts. Until the time of this writing, I’m using a free web hosting package, though. My reason in choosing a free package is just to test drive ‘free package’ before jumping onto paid hosting.

Here are some genuine tips for choosing the right free/cheap/reliable web host…

  • Find out how long they are in business. (Some are very new, never faced hard times.)
  • See genuine reviews. (Do some research. You’d definitely feel better while signing up.)
  • Find out their integrity. (Genuine web hosts provide/display as many details as possible to users. Some even put up their uptime/downtime, public forum, uptime guarantee etc.)
  • Technical Details. (Clustering hosting yield faster page loads.)
  • Read their TOS. (Very important. You might find many things that you just can’t accept.)

I’m currently hosting my domain (luckweaver.net) in byethost. They _seem_ good so far.  So, free web hosting is not a joke for me yet. Try it(byethost), if you have time and send me a review, if you have any issues with them.

Wahm.in Forum

2008 August 26

Hi there,

This is a forum targeted towards India. The forum admin has been doing a noble task by providing contracted work to unemployed people in India. He has his unique style of selecting people for his work. He needs to know what kind of computer, internet connection one has got before assigning work. He also needs to know how many hours a person can dedicate. And finally he expects a proper resume too.

He has a point here. Let me go through one by one.

  • There are many people who don’t have a proper computer and/or reliable internet connection in India. There are people who still use P3 computers (with 128 MB memory and Windows 98) and expect to earn $10 an hour. And there are some people who have a BSNL connection and think it is a reliable connection. There is no doubt BSNL has done a great job by making internet avaiable to rural people with affordable rate. But the question is, “Is BSNL reliable?”. I bet it isn’t. You could refer http://broadbandforum.in/ to see others’ opinion on this issue.
  • And the next point is availability. He’d like to know how many hours a person can dedicate. He doesn’t want anyone to quit his/her present job and take his assignments. However, he’d like to know if the applicant can stick to what he/she promises. For example, if an applicant assures to work for 4 hours a day, every employer in this earth expects the same from the applicant.
  • Finally resume. There are brilliant people, who speak/write English naturally/fluently, out here in India. Well, in reality, how many of them are working as a freelancer (part-time or full-time)? It’s hardly countable. Many of those exceptional people join in companies where the starting package is more than what their parents earned in ten years. So it is natural to ask their resume before applying for a job.

A similar system was followed by www.luckweaver.com. Unfortunately, there were many people who started scamming. Hope it wouldn’t happen to http://wahm.in/forum

Developer’s Tag

2008 August 19
by Pothi
I’ve been learning HTML for a while. I could say I’m a beginner here. But I’m sure, one fine day, I would become an expert in it. Today I came across an interesting tag. It’s ‘Base’ tag.
The advantage of base tag is ease of coding. It gives Path Information for the developers. One could create individual directories to keep similar files like HTML documents, images, CSS files and easily ‘access’ everything from the ‘base’ URI. The end user could not see any improvement in the documents that is being presented. So it’s of no use for an end user. But I bet this is the most favorite tag among developers. So I don’t have any hesitation to call it as Developer’s Tag.

Productivity!

I recently got an opportunity to work as ‘Productivity Expert’ in oDesk. I learned a lot of things from that. It brought some new paradigms in me. Let me share what I have in my mind regarding ‘Productivity’.

Everyone wants to be productive in their career and/or in their life.

In career, it brings more attention, more energy and of course a better pay check.

In life, it brings more time, more happiness, more enthusiasm and a better balance.

But the question is: how can we increase our productivity?

Increasing productivity doesn’t happen in a day or two. It is a process just like improving your skill set. In this blog, let me start posting few genuine tips to improve productivity. I’ve already done so by posting an article about ‘Google Gears’ on July 12, 2008.

Do come back here to find more tips on ‘Productivity’.

Thanks and Have A Marvelous Time.
